I'm fed up with women's magazines!

I know we are very aware of the damaging headlines on women’s magazines.

I decided on my six hour flight/train/bus fiasco that I was going to buy one to read. Not because I’ve missed hearing about how large certain women’s arses are or if Kim Kardashian is fighting with Kanye but because I had six hours to kill and I wasn’t sure I could cope with just the three Sunday Times Magazines I had. So off I went.

Some magazines are better then others. I don’t mind Glamor, Vogue or Grazia as much as I mind some of the others.

I was mildly tempted by a Marie Clare with a new Nails Inc varnish attached to it. But I resisted due to the fact that in Ireland, magazines are expensive and I didn’t feel MC was worth it. I did notice some  of the headlines though.

NOW magazine (which to be fair is garbage) was screaming about the rise of the extreme bodies while attaching sentences like ‘Massive bums’ to pictures of Nicky Minaj and also, ‘ Bambi legs’ to a picture of another person. No wonder we are so messed up about our images. Also, it brings to mind the sort of bullying that people did in secondary school.

Deciding to look away from all the negative body image stuff is difficult. If your not going to buy a magazine with a negative body headline then that reduces your choice massively. It basically means no cheap tabloid-ish magazines. Which to be fair, is not a loss.

But some of the fashion magazines like Grazia were at it too!

Grazia seem to enjoy highlighting the fights and failures of women.

Over the years they have delighted in holding Jennifer Aniston up as a single unmarried freak show left ruined by her ex. They continued with this ‘fun’ long after other magazines had moved on to more recent prey. The heading was about a secret love feud between Beyonce and Rihanna. How they are fighting over a man. Grazia does love a good fight between two women - even if its not really a thing.

It’s so depressing. How often do you see men’s magazines talking about imaginary feuds between celebrity men? How often do men get held up for having been left for another person and portrayed as broken? And how often do men have to deal with headlines talking about their bodies in a negative light?

Also, why does this do us as women when the only headlines we see frequently are the others that portray us and our friendships this way?

I’m bored of it. Which is why I never buy magazines. I’m sorry I tried!
