Ariana Grande's "Problem" - Single Review

A song review a month in the works.

When Ariana Grande, known for her roles on Nickelodeon tween shows, found her voice and began dominating the music charts she definitely had everyone talking. The 20-year-old, with a voice that rivals that of Mariah Carey, is readying the release of her sophomore album by unleashing "Problem" featuring Iggy Azalea in late April, a track already being labeled as "the song of the summer".

The lead effort is a mix of influences and sounds all perfectly rolled into one hard-hitting, uptempo pop-like song building up buzz and further shedding Grande's innocent appearance. Iggy Azalea, who is currently experiencing her biggest success to date with "Fancy", jumps on the single at the right time with a rap verse that only adds to the fun. Two up and coming divas on one track leads to one of the best-selling efforts of the year already.

"Problem" does focus the attention on Grande's impressive vocal range, but it's the production that really has the new song pumping. Supported by trumpets and saxophones, the song sounds to be a throwback to decades past while having the potential to crossover into the R&B genre. "Head in the clouds, got no weight on my shoulders, I should be wiser, and realize that I've got one less problem without ya." the artist realizes with the uncredited help of Big Sean. It's a thriving, jazzy, hip-hop music moment that is blowing up radio airwaves.

When initially released, my opinions on the track were lukewarm at best. Grande is a beautiful girl with immense talent, I just never fully impressed with her previous efforts. Her singles have been decent, I may not like the fact they all feature another vocalist, but "Problem" does stand out as her best release to date. It is mature, it's extremely catchy and shows a different side to her persona. With a few well-received live performances, solid selling potential and an upcoming music video, it's safe to say the single will be one victim of massive overplay.
