Boston DepartmentDetectives font Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) and Bobby Hayes (Kevin Bacon) fly safe full of gold found during a drug bust, and Nick buries his share of gold in his garden, with the intent to use them to create a better life for himself and his wife, Julia (Stephanie Szostak). However, he regrets his decision and inform Hayes plan to return the gold. Later, during a raid on a warehouse, Nick Hayes and get into a shootout with criminals, and Nick Hayes killed to prevent him from returning gold, framing a criminal for murder
. Nick wakes up in the office of Proctor Mildred (Mary-Louise Parker), director of the Rest In Peace Department (RIPD), an agency that recruits Fallen Police Officers to patrol beyond and capture "Deados" spirits who refuse to cross over and return to the earth as monstrous ghosts. Nick agrees to join ripd after Proctor promises to help reunite with Julia and meets his new partner, Roy Pulsipher (Jeff Bridges), a former U.S. Marshall who lived in the 1800s
. Nick and Roy return to Earth to attend the funeral of Nick, where Nick learns ripd officers are assigned avatars, which is how humans perceive them. Nick is an elderly Chinese man, Jerry Chen (James Hong) and Roy is a beautiful Russian woman, Opal Pavlenko (Marisa Miller). After failing to contact Julia, Nick Roy accompanied to the apartment of a suspect, Stanley Nawlicki (Robert Knepper), who tries to escape and is killed by the duo. Gold coins the same as Nick stolen are found in the possessions of Nawlicki and sent to the Interior analysis
. Nick Roy and then meet with Elliot (Mike O'Malley), a dealer is about to make a trade with someone, be revealed Hayes. Nick and Roy follow in Nick's house, where Hayes recovers from Nick Gold, leading Julia to believe Nick was corrupt. From there, the duo tails Hayes to an abandoned warehouse where he gave the gold medal to Deado, Pulaski (Devin Rattray), which escapes because of the intervention of Nick and Roy. Proctor furious them off the case, but they decided to continue the investigation on their own after learning the pieces of gold are components of the staff of Jericho, a mystical device that could reverse tunnel carrying the dead in the afterlife, they returned to New York
. Nick and Roy visit Hayes, who quickly finds that they are, and proves to be a Deado. He was arrested and taken to the headquarters of RIPD, where he and other Deados managed to escape after stealing the components of the Staff and Jericho return to Earth. While Deados assemble the staff of Jericho, kidnaps Julia Hayes to use as a human sacrifice to open the gate. Nick and Roy arrive and after killing Deados, including Pulaski, Nick will save Julia while Roy destroyed the headquarters of Jericho and save the city. Although Nick manages to kill Hayes, Julia succumbed to his injuries and died in his arms before Proctor arrives and informs Nick he earned redemption and Julia got a second chance
. Julia was revived at the hospital and begins recovery and restores Nick Proctor and Roy in the agency, in addition to providing Nick with a new avatar, which soon proved to be a Girl Scout 10 years (Piper Mackenzie Harris) , much to the disappointment of Nick. Nick Roy and then get in the car and drive Nick
