Adventures in Skyrim - Day 1

So unless you are truly not a gamer you already know that one of the most ambitious RPGs ever has hit the market recently entitled SKYRIM. Unlike almost any game made aside from maybe Grand Theft Auto, The Elder Scrolls saga constantly raises the bar for open world gaming.

Let me just say that this game is not only graphically impressive, it is somewhat intimidating (as I guess virtually every Elder Scrolls game is). Walking out of that first dungeon and hearing your companion send you on your way simply dashed me with a wave of "Errr, OMG... what in the world do I do now?!". I instantly took my female Khajit character named Jade to the highest point possible in hopes of just looking out over the landscape to see what I can see. Unlike some unlucky souls whom I've heard ran into Giants and Dragons as their first encounters, I managed to find a simple Bandit cave nearby that led to my decision to craft my character into magic using assassin of sorts. Upon tearing though this hideout, I instantly began jumping into the interesting equipment creation and forging aspect of the game with the intent of being an adventuring trader of sorts (my alibi I guess). I can only imagine the adventures I'll get myself into as I search for materials to forge that ultimate set of assassin's gear.

After clearing that cave, I roamed to the nearby town of Riverwood to check in with my companion and his blacksmith connection. There I traded a bit and determined what future tasks I would take on between advancing the plot of telling the Lord of the land about the dragon we had all seen recently.

With all that complete, I wrapped up my first 2 hours of playing SKYRIM with an amazed nod of admiration. Without a doubt I felt this game was more enjoyable than Oblivion. For some reason I couldn't get over the need to go into Oblivion portal after portal. Still, how can I forget those first moments of watching the hue of the sky darken and change as I approached a portal knowning what was in or around it. Ominous and memorable stuff to be assured. Still, I can't wait until my first Dragon siting. Dragon slaying looks to be one of those repeatedly fun and epic moments that I will never tire of though.

So, here's to Bethesda and possibly the best game of an impressive year of next-gen gaming!
